Pula. Croatia.

Hej, så har då turen kommit till Istriens huvudstad, Pula. Staden ligger på sydspetsen och där finns den vackra Amfiteatern. Imponerande att tänka på hur duktiga de var att bygga så fantastiska byggnader för så länge sedan. Ångrar lite att jag och Mimmi, min äldsta dotter, inte bokade biljetter till Oliver Dragojevic konsert här för fyra år sedan som överraskning för maken, just på hans födelsedag 1 juli. Tänk att sitta här en varm sommarkväll i solnedgången och lyssna på fantastisk vacker musik. Dessutom sista konserten som han höll innan han insjuknade i cancer. Oliver dog förra året, se mitt inlägg här om hans fantastiska musik. Förra året var han min mest spelade artist på Spotify!!

Hello, so time for the main capital in Istria; Pula. Its situated in the south corner of Istria and most famous is the Amphi Theather. Impressive to see and visit. Built so many years ago. Still regret that we didn’t went here for a concert with Oliver Dragojevic four years ago. A perfect birthday present for my husband, and on his birthday 1st of July. Imagine sitting here a warm summer nigh watching the sunset and hear Oliver playing. It was his last performance before the cancer hit him. He died last year, see my posting about his fantastic music here. Also my number one played artist last year on Spotify.

Pula är Istriens ekonomiska centrum med stor varvsindustri, men ändå en stad i behändigt format. Här bjuds man på välbevarade romerska tempel och en fantastisk romersk arena, en fläkt av habsburgsk sekelskiftesflärd, italienskt kaféliv, en vacker skärgård och dessutom en modern kroatisk storstad. Pula känns lite som en miniversion av Rom.

Pula is the economic center of Istria with large shipbuilding industry, but still a city in convenient format. Here you can see well-preserved Roman temples and a fantastic Roman arena, get a flare of the Habsburg century turnip, Italian cafe life, a beautiful archipelago and also a modern Croatian big city. Pula feels a bit like a mini version of Rome.

Huvudgatan Giardini med breda trottoarer och alla kaféer och reklamskyltar för Illykaffe (som för övrigt har sitt huvudkontor i Trieste). Torgen och gränderna med sina blanknötta sandstensblock, vilket är så typiskt för många kroatiska städer. Bågarna, kolonnerna och templet från romarriket. Restaurangerna som serverar pecorino (hård getost), prosciutto crudo (lufttorkad skinka) och pasta med vit tryffel. Ovanpå det italienska vilar allt det kroatiska, med sin livsstil, musik och estetik som känns som den felande länken mellan Grekland och Italien, mellan Balkan och EU, mellan öst och väst.

The main street Giardini with wide sidewalks and all cafes and advertising signs for Illy coffee (which by the way has its headquarters in Trieste). The square and the alleys with their worn-and-shiny sandstone blocks, which is so typical for many Croatian cities. The arches, columns and temple of the Roman Empire. The restaurants serve pecorino (hard goat cheese), prosciutto crudo (air-dried ham) and pasta with white truffle. On top of the Italian you feel the Croatian impact, with its lifestyle, music and aesthetics, which feels like the missing link between Greece and Italy, between the Balkans and the EU, between East and West.

Redan 177 f Kr började romarriket att kolonialisera staden. Under kejsar Augustus (63 f Kr–14 e Kr) byggdes den stora amfiteatern, som idag är Pulas mest kända byggnadsminne från antiken. Därefter har Pula liksom resten av Istrien tillhör både Österrike och Italien, i omgångar. 1866 blev Pula huvudhamn för den österrikisk-ungerska flottan. Efter andra världskriget blev Pula liksom Istrien en del av Jugoslavien, och efter inbördeskriget Kroatien.

Already 177 BC, the Roman Empire began to colonize the city. During Emperor Augustus (63 BC - 14 AD) the large amphitheater was built, which today is Pula's most famous building memory from antiquity. After that, Pula, like the rest of Istria, belongs to both Austria and Italy over the decades. In 1866, Pula became the main port for the Austrian-Hungarian fleet. After World War II, Pula, like the rest of Istria, became part of Yugoslavia, and the civil war Croatia.

Det är vackert att ara strosa runt i Pula och känna historiens vingslag. Här finns Sergiansbågen som byggdes 27 f Kr för att hedra tre medlemmar i familjen Sergius. Forum var stadens centrala torg under antiken och medeltiden – och är det på sätt och vis fortfarande. Här ligger barer, kaféer och restauranger, som sommartid har stora uteserveringar. I norra änden av torget finns det välbevarade Augustustemplet, Capitolinetemplet, som var tillägnat guden Herkules, Pulas beskyddare, och Dianatemplet. Jungfru Maria-katedralen (Katedrala Svete Marije). Här stod ursprungligen ett romerskt tempel men det byggdes om till kristet kapell på 500-talet under kristendomens första kämpande århundraden. På en höjd mitt i gamla stan ligger kastellet, en stjärnformad försvarsanläggning som byggdes av venetianerna på 1600-talet. Här finns också det Arkeologiska museet och Porta Gemina. Antika romerska fynd från hela Istrien finns samlade på ett par våningsplan.

It is beautiful just to stroll around in Pula and feel the wing of history. Here is the Sergian Arch which was built 27 BC to honor three members of the Sergius family. Forum was the city's central square during antiquity and the Middle Ages - and is still that way. Here you will find bars, cafes and restaurants, which have large outdoor seating in summer. At the northern end of the square is the well-preserved Augustus temple, the Temple of Capitoline, dedicated to the god Hercules, the patron of Pula, and the Temple of Diana. Cathedral of the Virgin Mary (Cathedral Svete Marije). Originally a Roman temple, it was converted into a Christian chapel in the 5th century during the first centuries of Christianity. At a height in the middle of the old town is the castle, a star-shaped defense facility built by the Venetians in the 17th century. There is also the Archaeological Museum and Porta Gemina. Ancient Roman finds from all over Istria are gathered on a couple of floors.

I had some photos from these places but left the wrong cord at home so you have to see them another time.

Här finns också ett cafe uppkallat efter James Joyce mest berömda verk Ulysses (vilket av många anses som 1900-tales mest inflytelserika verk) . James Joyce bodde här under några år och han var mycket produktiv och skrev “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” här men han verkar inte ha gillat Istrien så särdeles mycket.

In the city there is a cafe called Ulysses (by many considered to be the 20th century most influential works), the novel written by James Joyce. Though Joyce had a productive time in Pula, writing much of what subsequently became Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the city made next to no impact on his literary imagination. In letters home he described it as “a back-of-God-speed place – a naval Siberia”, adding that “Istria is a long boring place wedged into the Adriatic, peopled by ignorant Slavs who wear red caps and colossal breeches.”
