Svalbard, Norway 2027?

Hej, som jag har skrivit ett flertal gånger här på bloggen så inspirerar mina döttrar mig på olika sätt. Min äldsta med vilka böcker att läsa bl.a. Hon hade med sig ovanstående bok “Expeditionen - Min kärlekshistoria” av Bea Uusma. En helt fascinerande bok skriven av en fascinerande författarinna. Den handlar om vad som hände med Andreés polarexpedition där de skulle flyga luftballong till Nordpolen 1897. Allt gick fel och de tre deltagarna dog. Dock är hur de dog fortfarande ett mysterium och Bea Uusma lägger ner massa tid och utbildar sig t.o.m. till läkare för att läsa och förstå obduktionsprotokoll mm för att en gång för alla utreda vad de tre männen dog av.

En fristående uppföljare till ovanstående bok “Vitön” kom ut 2025. Den har jag inte läst än, men det skall jag självklart göra!.

Andrées polarexpedition var ett försök lett av ingenjören Salomon August Andrée att 1897 resa över Arktis med vätgasballongen Örnen. Vitön, är den nordligaste delen av Svalbard i Norra ishavet, öster om Nordaustlandet, och är känd för att vara platsen där Andrée-expeditionens kvarlevor hittades 1930. Den är en av Svalbards ytterpunkter och täcks mestadels av is. 

Svalbard, tidigare Spetsbergen, är en ögrupp i Norra ishavet som tillhör Norge. Öarna befinner sig långt norr om polcirkeln, ungefär mitt emellan Nordkap och den geografiska nordpolen. Svalbards största ö Spetsbergen utgör mer än hälften av ögruppens 61 045 km² och hyser alla dess 2 900 invånare. (källa Wikipedia).

Hi, as I have written several times here on the blog, my daughters inspire me in different ways. My eldest with which books to read, among other things. She brought the above book “Expedition, Solving the Mystery of a Polar Tragedy” by Bea Uusma. A very fascinating book written by a fascinating author. It is about what happened with Andreé’s polar expedition where they were supposed to fly a hot air balloon to the North Pole in 1897. Everything went wrong and the three participants died. However, how they died is still a mystery and Bea Uusma is spending a lot of time and even training as a doctor to read and understand autopsy reports etc. in order to once and for all find out what the three men died of.

A standalone sequel to the above book “Vitön” was published in 2025, but hasn’t been translated to English yet. I haven’t read it yet, but I will of course!.

Vitön, or the White Island, is the northernmost part of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean, east of Nordaustlandet, and is famous for being the place where the remains of the Andrée expedition were found in 1930. It is one of the extreme points of Svalbard and is mostly covered by ice.

Svalbard, formerly Spitsbergen, is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean belonging to Norway. The islands are located far north of the Arctic Circle, approximately midway between the North Cape and the geographic North Pole. Svalbard's largest island, Spitsbergen, constitutes more than half of the archipelago's 61,045 km² and is home to all of its 2,900 inhabitants. (source Wikipedia).

Jag har sedan 90-talet närt en dröm att åka till Svalbard. En gammal kollega åkte dit med båt och jag fick se hans foton. Helt fantastiskt och han var hel salig efter denna resa. Denna dröm har legat där och vilat under årens lopp.

Tills nu, när min dotter skrev till mig i lördags att man kan åka med Hurtigrutten (ett norsk rederi) till Svalbard, och vore inte det kul, fantastiskt och inspirerande! Hon har för övrigt läst båda böckerna, så klart!! Vi började skriva till varandra och vi blev båda så exalterade att vi där och då nog har bestämt oss för att åka dit nästa sommar, i midnattsolensland!! Tänk!!!

Vi screenshotade till varandra hela förmiddagen från olika sidor på Hurtigruttens hemsida. En 15 dagars resa hela Norges kust från Bergen och uppåt. Även det har vi båda velat göra, och jag har länge velat visa min man Norge och genom en sådan resa knyta an till min familj som var mycket i Norge och ett land som min mamma och pappa älskade.

I have had a dream to go to Svalbard since the 90s. An colleague of mine back in the days went there by boat and I got to see his photos. Absolutely fantastic and he was completely blissful after this trip. This dream has been lying there and resting over the years.

Until now, when my daughter wrote to me last Saturday that you can go with Hurtigruten (a Norwegian shipping company) to Svalbard, would that be fun, fantastic and interesting! She has by the way read both books above. We started writing to each other and we both got so excited that we most probably decided then and there to go there next summer, to the land of the midnight sun!! Amazing!!!

We screenshotted each other the whole morning from different pages on Hurtigruten's website. A 15-day trip along the entire coast of Norway from Bergen and up. We have both wanted to do that too, and I have long wanted to show my husband Norway and through such a trip connect with my family who were in Norway a lot and a country that my mother and father loved.

På söndagen hördes vi av igen och vi båda hade drömt om Svalbard och isbjörnar. Mysigt!

Vi får se hur det blir men tänk vad fantastiskt det skulle vara att göra denna resa! Den ligger numera i min planering för 2027. Vi hörs! Ciao Catharina

California Dreamin’

Hej på dig och hej torsdag! Sista torsdagen i november. Dags att börja plocka fram adventsdekorationen, eller är du en “novent” person som redan har dekorerat hela lägenheten / huset med juldekorationer? Det är inte jag men jag har börjat juldekorera tidigare och tidigare i december, om jag nu juldekorers alls. Ibland tycker jag att det är det skönt att göra som jag vill / känner för, ibland tar jag fram allt och ibland inget eller ibland något däremellan. För mig beror det numera om mina döttrar är här hos mig eller inte, oftast, om jag juldekorerar eller inte.

Här kommer nu sista inlägget från vår fantastiska resa till södra Kalifornien. Jag har fortfarande vår resa till Sydafrika att dela med er, men det får bli lite julläsningen tänker jag.

Hello there and hello Thursday! Last Thursday in November. Time to start decoration for Advent, or are you a “novent” person who has already decorated the entire apartment / house with all Christmas decorations? It’s not me but I have started with my Christmas decorating earlier and earlier in December, if I decorate at all. Sometimes I think it’s nice to do what I want / feel like, sometimes I bring out everything and sometimes nothing or sometimes something in between. For me, it depends on whether my daughters are here with me or not, most of the time, if I decorate for Christmas or not.

Here is now the last post from our fantastic trip to Southern California. I still have our trip to South Africa to share with you, but I think it will be a bit of Christmas reading.

Sista kvällen i Montecito gick maken och jag ner en sista gång till Stilla havet för att simma, tja kanske bättre att säga, ta ett snabbt dopp. Och för att se på solnedgången och alla surfare. Vi kunde inte slita oss utan stannade tills det blev nästa mörkt.

On our last night in Montecito, my husband and I went down to the Pacific Ocean one last time to swim, or maybe better said, take a quick dip. And to watch the sunset and all the surfers. We couldn't help ourselves and stayed until it got dark.

Men till slut var vi tvungna att gå hem för vi skulle…

But in the end we had to go home because we were going to…

…ta en sista Margarita samt äta chips, salsa och guacamole på “vår” mexikanska stamställe. Så gott! Det blev 1 1/2 Margarita. Tur att jag delade den andra med maken, hehe MUMS!

…have one last Margarita and eat chips, salsa and guacamole at “our” Mexican regular. So good! It turned out to be 1 1/2 Margaritas. Luckily I shared the other one with my husband, hehe YUM!

Är man i Kalifornien så hör det till att man också åker upp i bergen, Santa Ynez och dess dalgångar, och inte bara att tillbringa tiden vid havet och alla surfare. Detta är lika mycket Kalifornien. Här finns stora ägor där man odlar mycket frukt och grönsaker, men här finns också många vingårdar. Vi hade tänkt att besöka några vingårdar men många hade tyvärr stängt för säsongen, så vi hoppade över det denna gången.

If you are in California, you also have to go up into the mountains, Santa Ynez and its valleys Santa Ynez and its valleys, and not just spend time by the sea and all the surfers. Härlig miljö, god mat och jag fick inspiration till att servera Affogato al caffè till efterrätt nu när vi får familj och vänner på besök under jul- och nyårshelgen.

Lovely environment, good food and I was inspired to serve Affogato al caffè for dessert now that we have family and friends visiting during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

…nämligen till Cold Spring Tavern. Under 1800-talet gick här i dalgången San Marcos Pass, som var vägen över bergen till havet där hästarna byttes ut och resenärerna fick vila. Läs mer här! Varje söndag spelar olika band, denna söndagen var det Tom Ball & Kenny Sultan.

3 oceaner, 1 månad. | 3 oceans, 1 month

Hej lördag och hej på dig! Morgonkaffe och läsa inspirerande bloggar, som alltid. Varje lördag, när jag är hemma. Snö ute och kallt. Härligt!

Jag insåg när vi var i Kapstaden att vi kommer att besöka tre oceaner på en månad; Atlanten, Indiska oceanen och Stilla havet. Och i alla tre oceaner, där vi var, så var det surfare ute och väntade på vågorna. Surfa är något som jag aldrig har haft något intresse för. Jag är tyvärr lite för rädd för vatten för att dränkas av vågor och rumla runt, och nu skulle jag ALDRIG klara av att resa mig upp från en surfbräda. Maken när han prövade att surfa när vi var i Durban 2017, kolla in här.

I realized when we were in Cape Town that we will visit three oceans in one month; the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. And in all three oceans, where we were, there were surfers out waiting for the waves. Surfing is something I have never had any interest in. Unfortunately, I am a little too afraid of water to be drowned by waves and tumble around, and now I would NEVER be able to get up from a surfboard. My My husband trying to surf when we were in Durban 2017 .

Sista och kortaste “simturen”, det blev väl mer som ett dopp, blev det i Stilla havet. Maken hade tagit ett dopp några dagar tidigare och hade inte parerat vågorna korrekt så han blev dragen in under vågen och fick massa skrapmärken. Så vänd aldrig ryggen till de mäktiga vågorna. Här är maken med ett Sydafrikansk sportmärke som heter Burnt Studios. Vi köpte naturligtvis varsitt set, snyggt och till riktigt bra pris. Perfekt för att våra promenader längs havet.

The last and shortest “swim”, it was actually more like a quick dip, was in the Pacific Ocean. The husband had taken a swim a few days earlier and had not parried the waves correctly so he was pulled under the wave and got a lot of scrapes. So never turn your back on the mighty waves. Here is the husband with a South African sports brand called Burnt Studios. Of course we each bought a set, nice and at a really good price. Perfect for our walks along the sea.

Sista eftermiddagen / kvällen i Montecito tog dock mod till oss och tog ett snabbt dopp…

However, the last afternoon/evening in Montecito took courage and we took a quick swim…

När vi var i Camps Bay, Kapstaden badade jag i Atlanten. Här var det ca 18 grader och jag simmade ett par rundor. Kallt? Japp och så skönt! Här kändes det mest säkert att simma då de har byggt en “pool” och inga underströmmar kommer in här pga muren (som ni ser lite längre ut).

When we were in Camps Bay, Cape Town I swam in the Atlantic Ocean. It was about 18 degrees here and I swam a couple of laps. Cold? Yep and so nice! It felt safest to swim here as they have built a “pool” and no undercurrents come in here because of the wall (which you can see a little further away).

En relativt tidig morgon vid indiska oceanen med vågor och lite mulet väder. Men det var absolut värt att ta ett snabbt dopp här. Så från en som inte tog ett enda bad förra året har detta året badat massor, inte bara i medelhavet utan i stora oceaner. De är mäktiga, kalla, stora vågor, understömmar och respektingivande. A relatively early morning at the Indian Ocean with waves and a bit cloudy weather. But it was definitely worth taking a quick dip here. So from someone who didn't take a single swim last year, this year I've swum a lot, not just in the Mediterranean but in large oceans. They are powerful, cold, big waves, undercurrents and awe-inspiring. Have a nice Saturday! Ciao Catharina

LA. California.

Vi landade på LAX, Los Angeles International Airport tisdagen den 21 oktober efter lunch. Hela resan gick riktigt smidig och när vi landat på LAX gick det ovanligt smidigt genom passkontroll och att hämta bagaget. Jag har rest massor till USA genom åren och de är alltid stränga här i passkontrollen så jag tänkte att nu när mycket har ändrats så kanske kontrollen skulle bli ännu strängare, men som tur var inte. Stuart och Lore stod och väntade på oss, och de undrade om vi var hungriga och det var vi…

We landed at LAX, Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday, October 21st after lunch. The whole trip went really smoothly and when we landed at LAX it went unusually smoothly through passport control and picking up our luggage. I have traveled a lot to the USA over the years and they are always strict here at passport control so I thought that now that a lot has changed the control might be even stricter, but luckily it wasn't. Stuart and Lore were waiting for us, and they wondered if we were hungry and we were…

…så vi åkte till via Malibu och stannade till på The Sunset vid havet. Restaurangen ser mer ut som ett surferhäng och det är det säkert. Och vi valde på rekommendation… Vi åkte Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) som tog igenom en stor del av där branden i våras härjade. Alla hus som inte fanns längre, arbetet längs PCH för att hindra jordras och vi såg lite av The Palisades, men denna delen av LA ligger mer uppåt i bergen. Så ledsamt att se förstörelsen både av hus, byggnader och tillvaron för mängder med människor.

…so we went via Malibu and stopped at The Sunset by the ocean. The restaurant looks more like a surfer's hangout and it certainly is. And we chose it on recommendation… We drove the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) which took us through a large part of where the fire last spring raged. All the houses that were no longer there, the work along the PCH to prevent landslides and we saw a bit of The Palisades, but this part of LA is more up in the mountains. So sad to see the destruction of both houses, buildings and the lives of many people.

…deras hummertacos som var orimligt god samt drack en riktigt god chardonnay till. Och en Caesar sallad som man bara MÅSTE äta när man är i USA. Alltid god! Ett härligt sätt att landa på efter lång resa. Men det tog inte slut där utan vi gjorde ett stopp till…

…their lobster tacos which were unreasonably good and drank a really good chardonnay. And a Caesar salad that you just HAVE to eat when you're in the US. Always delicious! A lovely way to land after a long journey. But it didn't end there, we made another stop…

…och sedan var det dags att åka hem till Stuart och Lore för att installera oss i gästrummet och för att sova. Detta var ett bra knep till att anpassa oss till amerikansk tid. Och nu var vi lite runda under fötterna och glada, så vi sov så gott.

…and then it was time to go home to Stuart and Lore to settle in the guest room and sleep. This was a good trick to adjust to American time. And now we were a little round underfoot and happy, so we slept so well.

En dryg vecka senare var det dags att göra en heldag i LA. Vi åkte tidigt på förmiddagen. Vi åkte in via Sunset Boulevard och Beverly Hills, samt Rodeo Drive där vi stannade och kikade i de lyxiga butikerna.

A little over a week later it was time to spend a full day in LA. We left early in the morning. We drove in via Sunset Boulevard and Beverly Hills, as well as Rodeo Drive where we stopped and looked at the luxury stores.

Sedan var vi hungriga och åkte vidare till Santa Monica för att äta ännu en god lunch, denna gången på The Lobster. En institution här i Santa Monica, och har funnit här sedan 1923. Det är riktig amerikans historia, mycket här är inte så gammalt.

Then we were hungry and went on to Santa Monica to have another delicious lunch, this time at The Lobster. . An institution here in Santa Monica, and has been here since 1923. It's real American history, a lot of it here is not that old.

Och ännu lite mer intressant information, The Lobster ligger i början på Santa Monica Pier, där Route 66 möter Stilla havet.

And some additional fun fact, The Lobster is located on Santa Monica Pier, where Route 66 meets the Pacific Ocean.

Efter lunchen tog vi en liten promenad på just Santa Monica Pier. Här skulle man ha kunnat stannat längre. Note to self.

Vi åkte förbi Ocean Lodge Hotel, som ju förekommer i serien Goliath med Billy Bob Thornton. Kommer vi tillbaka så kommer vi att stanna här nästa gång och gå till den sunkiga baren som också var med i serien; Chez Jay som ligger precis bredvid hotellet. Haha så vi skippar Beverly Hills och Rodeo Drive nästa gång och kommer hit.

We drove past the Ocean Lodge Hotel, which is featured in the series Goliath with Billy Bob Thornton. If we come back, we will stay here next time and go to the seedy bar that was also featured in the series; Chez Jay which is right next to the hotel. Haha so we will skip Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive next time and come here.

Vi stannade till hos några vänner till Stuart och Lore som bor i Santa Monica. Jag träffade dem för över 30 år sedan då de bodde i Malibu. Mysigt!! Så nu var det dags att åka hem men vi behövde ju få något i magen, så vi stannade på Tra di Noi Ristorante. Och jag som älskar Spagetti Vongole åt den godast Vongolen någonsin. Helt fantastisk!!

We stopped by some friends of Stuart and Lore who live in Santa Monica. I met them over 30 years ago when they lived in Malibu. Cozy!! So now it was time to go home but we needed something to eat, so we stopped at Tra di Noi Ristorante. And I who love Spagetti Vongole ate the best Vongole ever. Absolutely fantastic!!

Restaurangen som brukar vara fullsatt en fredagkväll var nästan helt tom. Men det var ju Halloween och LA Dodgers spelade en viktig match så alla var på annan plats. Dodgers vann ligan i baseball. Sen var det dags att åka hem. En mysig dag i LA som gav mersmak. Maken blev positivt överraskad av staden. Men så såg vi ju de bättre delarna också. Ha en fin lördag! Ciao Catharina

PS. Och tänk nu blir säkert Santa Barbara och Montecito ännu mer känt då vår svenska skådespelare Stellan Skarsgård kommer att få The Montecito Award på Santa Barbara Film Festival i början på nästa år. Så kom ihåg var ni läste om Santa Barbara och Montecito första gången, haha

The restaurant, which is usually packed on a Friday night, was almost completely empty. But it was Halloween and the LA Dodgers were playing an important game so everyone was somewhere else. The Dodgers won the league in baseball. Then it was time to go home. A cozy day in LA that left me wanting more. My husband was pleasantly surprised by the city. But then we saw the better parts too. NB. And just think, Santa Barbara and Montecito will probably become even more famous now that our Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård will receive The Montecito Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival early next year. So remember where you first read about Santa Barbara and Montecito, haha

Happy Friday! Nu blir det tre lite kortare inlägg om vår USA-resa. Och sedan blir det några inlägg från vår fantastiska resa till Sydafrika och allt annat som jag vill dela med er.

Santa Barbara ligger ca 15 minuter med bil från Montecito. Santa Barbara ligger också vid havet och är en vacker och charmiga stad med spanskinspirerade arkitektur, en blomstrande mat- och vinscen och avslappnade kaliforniska atmosfär. Vi var här tre gånger men om det blir en nästa gång så kommer vi absolut att åka hit och utforska denna staden mer.

Santa Barbara is about 15 minutes by car from Montecito. Santa Barbara is also located by the sea and is a beautiful and charming city with Spanish-inspired architecture, a thriving food and wine scene and a relaxed Californian atmosphere. We were here three times but if there is a next time we will definitely go here and explore this city more.

Vi köpte ingen registreringsskylt till vår bil, hehe men vi köpte varsin t-shirt och collegetröja, samt några klistermärken till min dator. Lite turistisk måste man ju få vara.

We didn't buy a license plate for our car, hehe, but we each bought a t-shirt and a sweatshirt, as well as some stickers for my computer. You have to be a little touristy.

Vi besökt naturligtvis Stearns Wharf, en av Santa Barbaras mest ikoniska landmärken. Uppkallad efter byggmästaren John P. Stearns och belägen i slutet av State Street, är det Kaliforniens äldsta fungerande kaj och den perfekta platsen att njuta av solen, salta brisar och fantastiska vyer över den fantastiska blå Stilla havet. Kajen färdigställdes 1872 och betjänade passagerar- och godstransporter på Kaliforniens sydkust i mer än 25 år. Idag är det en av Santa Barbaras mest besökta attraktioner och en stöttepelare i Waterfront district.

We did of course visit Stearns Wharf, one of Santa Barbara’s most iconic landmarks. Named for builder John P. Stearns and located at the end of State Street, it is California’s oldest working wharf and the perfect spot to soak up the sun, salty breezes and stunning views of the impossibly blue Pacific. The Wharf was completed in 1872 and served the passengers and freight shipping needs of California’s south coast for more than 25 years. Today it’s one of Santa Barbara’s most visited attractions and a mainstay of the Waterfront district.

Visst är det vackert här? Och här ser ni också Santa Ynez bergen i bakgrunden. Och jag verkligen älskar palmerna! De ger en sådan fantastisk känsla.

Isn't it beautiful here? And here you can also see the Santa Ynez Mountains in the background. And I really love the palm trees! They give such a fantastic feeling.

Vi gjorde ett kort besök på Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center. Intressant att se livet under ytan i Stilla havet.

We made a short visit to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center Interesting to see life under the surface of the Pacific Ocean.

Vi åt tacos i solen, och drack lite vin på piren. Mysigt!

Vi besökte också Farmers Market två lördagar i Santa Barbara. Här är maken med Lore när vi hade köpt de ekologiska jordgubbarna från Harry’s Berries. Så goda! Både värt priset och att åka hit tidig på lördagen för att hinna köpa dem innan de tog slut.

We also visited the Farmers Market two Saturdays in Santa Barbara. Here is Lore's husband after we bought the organic strawberries from Harry’s Berries. So good! Both worth the price and going here early on a Saturday in order to buy a couple of boxes before they run out.

Vi blev sugna på att köpa massa goda saker. Lite annorlunda från hemma och mer av spanskt-mexikansk mat.

We were tempted to buy lots of good things. A little different from home and more of Spanish-Mexican food.

Så detta var kort om det lilla vi gjorde i Santa Barbara. Ikväll skall vi äta gåsmiddag hos några av våra vänner. Det ser jag verkligen fram emot. Det är så gott! Vi ses! Ciao Catharina
